Deputies Arrest Suspect After Violent Assault
Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a Domestic Violence call and arrested the suspect for multiple felony and misdemeanor crimes. Thankfully, the adult female victim was able to escape with her young children after sustaining physical injuries that appeared to be non-life threatening.
On November 12, 2024, at approximately 1:20 am, prior to the assault call, Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a person bothering call where an unknown male was reportedly knocking on the door of a home on S. Assembly Road, south of Garden Springs Road. They contacted a male who matched the suspect’s description, identified as 33-year-old Darius L. Denmon.
Denmon explained that he was completely blind, dropped off by a cab, and was trying to find his girlfriend’s residence but was unsuccessful. Deputies assisted Denmon to the correct address, confirming that the address belonged to the female he was attempting to contact and that neither party had a protection order prohibiting contact. Denmon knocked on the door, but no one answered.
Concerned about Denmon’s welfare, Deputies called Denmon’s mom, who agreed to pick him up. Denmon explained he was fine waiting for his ride and didn’t need further assistance. Lacking any legal justification to remain, Deputies cleared the scene.
At approximately 2:50 am, Deputies received a Domestic Violence call at the same location and returned.
They spoke with the adult female victim, who explained that Denmon refused to leave her residence, violently assaulted her, tried to sexually assault her, broke an inside door, and tried to prevent her from leaving. She also said that at one point during the violent assault, she was holding her child, but she was eventually able to escape with her children and called 911.
The victim and her children were transported to the hospital for additional treatment and evaluation.
Deputies returned to the victim’s residence, established a perimeter, and attempted to contact Denmon, who was now throwing items from the home through a broken window. After multiple PA announcements and use-of-force warnings, Denmon, bleeding from cuts on his arms and face, finally surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.
Denmon was advised of his rights and refused to answer questions or provide a statement. He was informed he was under arrest and provided medical treatment for his injuries.
The victim was reinterviewed and explained that Denmon began knocking on her door at approximately 2:00 or 2:30 am. She answered and explained he was not welcome there. He said he got lost trying to find her home and needed to use the bathroom. She reluctantly granted his request, but he refused to leave afterward, saying his mother was on the way to pick him up. Once Denmon received a text that his ride was close, he tried to sexually assault the victim, and when she resisted, he began to violently assault her.
Fearing for her and her children’s safety, she tried to escape, but Denmon blocked her way and continued the assault, during which he slammed her against a wall while she was holding one child. She took her children into a room and locked the door, but Denmon broke the door to gain access and continue his violent assault. She pretended to be unconscious to trick Denmon, which seemed to work, giving her enough time to gather her children and flee to a neighbor’s to call 911. Deputies contacted a Domestic Violence Advocate for the victim to gain additional assistance and resources.
Following the investigation, Deputies established probable cause to charge Denmon with multiple felony and misdemeanor crimes.
After being medically cleared, Denmon was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail for Burglary 1st Degree, Assault 2nd Degree, Unlawful Imprisonment, Rape 1st Degree (Attempted), Malicious Mischief 2nd Degree, Assault 4th Degree, and Harassment Threat to Harm.
On November 13, 2024, Spokane County Superior Court Commissioner E. Cruz set Denmon’s total bond at $100,000, and he currently remains in custody.
