Convicted Felon Arrested for Burglary after Short Foot Pursuit
Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies and Detectives located and arrested a multi-time convicted felon for residential burglary at the conclusion of a short foot pursuit. The suspect, who also had a valid warrant for his arrest, was booked into the jail.
Spokane County Investigative Unit (SCIU) Detectives continue their investigation, and additional charges are possible.
In late September 2024, Spokane County Deputies responded to a reported residential burglary at an apartment near E. Buckey Avenue and N. Custer Road.
The victim, out of the area at the time, reported seeing security video of an unknown male entering her apartment without permission. She notified a family member, who then reported the incident.
Deputies arrived and ensured no one was in the apartment. After collecting and reviewing the video footage, the initial investigation was forwarded to SCIU Detectives.
SCIU Investigators, with the assistance of apartment complex staff, positively identified the male suspect as 43-year-old Ian I. Tanner. The security video showed Tanner entering the victim’s apartment and walking into a room where he appeared to notice one of the cameras. He quickly tried to conceal his face with his sweatshirt and, soon after, exited the apartment.
As they continued to conduct follow-up interviews, SCIU Detectives learned Tanner was driving a green Jeep and would be arriving at a location in the 5200 block of E. Sprague later in the afternoon on October 1, 2024.
At approximately 2:15 pm, SCIU Detectives, with the assistance of Deputies in marked patrol cars, waited in the area until Tanner arrived in the parking lot, driving the Jeep. Detectives and Deputies moved in and blocked the Jeep to prevent a possible pursuit.
Tanner initially complied with commands to show his hands and exit the vehicle. Suddenly, Tanner chose to flee, blindly running across Sprague Avenue, narrowly escaping being hit by an unsuspecting motorist. Deputies and Detectives pursuing Tanner caught up quickly, took him to the ground, and placed him in handcuffs without further incident.
SCIU Investigators noted that Tanner was wearing the same color and name-brand shoes he was wearing in video footage at the time of the burglary. After being advised of his rights, Tanner admitted entering the victim’s apartment but denied stealing anything.
A check of Tanner’s criminal history showed several felony convictions for various crimes and an active misdemeanor Theft 3rd Degree warrant for his arrest.
Tanner was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail for Residential Burglary and his warrant. The following day, Tanner appeared in Spokane County Superior Court, where Superior Court Commissioner E. Cruz set his bond at $10,000.
Tanner, previously released from jail after posting bond on unrelated charges of Identity Theft 2nd Degree (2 counts), Possession of Stolen Property 2nd Degree, and Theft 1st Degree, had his bond on these charges revoked. The Spokane Police Department also added additional charges of Identity Theft 2nd Degree and Possession of Stolen Property 2nd Degree.
Tanner’s total bond now sits at $20,000.
This remains an active investigation, and additional charges are possible.
