UPDATE: Deputy Stabbed by Suspect at Welfare/Crisis Call

We are extremely pleased to let everyone in our community know that the Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy who was stabbed last night is doing well and in stable condition.  His surgery went well, and he is expected to be released from the hospital once cleared to continue healing at home with his family before returning to duty.

We thank you all for your good wishes, prayers, and messages of support for the Deputy, his family/friends, and all of us.

Additional Investigation Information:

Last night, the suspect, 32-year-old Gloria B. Endress (AKA: Engel W. Immer), was booked into the Spokane County Jail for charges of Assault 1st Degree and Assault 2nd Degree by Spokane Police Detectives.  She is expected to appear in Spokane County Superior Court this afternoon.

Information learned during the investigation indicates witnesses reported Endress was acting erratic, going up to residences, jumping fences, running through yards, and approaching vehicles while asking for help, water, or a ride.

Deputies arrived and attempted to contact Endress, who is known to law enforcement from past crisis-type calls, but she walked away from them and would not follow commands to show her hands and stop walking away.

Endress then approached a white truck that stopped near the intersection of Dalton Road and Wildrose Road and began speaking to the driver through an open passenger’s side window.

When the Deputy approached her, Endress spun quickly around, spraying OC/pepper/mace spray while holding a large knife in her other hand, and stabbed the Deputy in the upper left chest.

An assisting Deputy and the one who had been stabbed continued to address Endress and try to de-escalate the situation even though she remained aggressive, still armed with the knife and chemical spray.   Despite multiple commands to drop the knife (weapons) and use of force warnings, Endress would not comply.

When Endress began aggressing the Deputies, a Taser was eventually used to take her into custody.

We thank the Spokane Police Department for their assistance with this incident/investigation.
