Suspect Arrested for Residential Burglary, Malicious Mischief, and Theft

Spokane Valley Deputies detained a burglary suspect as he left an apartment the owner said he did not have permission to enter.   Deputies observed a broken mirror and several items moved inside the location, including a flat-screen TV removed from its wall mount.   The suspect was arrested and booked into jail for Burglary and other charges.

On July 27, 2024, at approximately 5:30 pm, Spokane Valley Deputies responded to a reported residential burglary of an apartment in the 10100 block of E. Main Avenue.

The victim reported coming home with her daughter to find someone had illegally entered her apartment, and she called 911.  While waiting for Deputies to arrive, she observed someone in her daughter’s bedroom and went inside, although she realized it was unsafe.  She immediately recognized the intruder as 43-year-old Joshua C. Zastoupil, an acquaintance she’d known for several years.  Zastoupil began yelling nonsensical statements, which alarmed the victim, and she left the apartment as Deputies arrived.

Deputies contacted and detained Zastoupil as he left the apartment.

The victim said she knew Zastoupil through her uncle, whom she lived next to for years, but never befriended him.  A few days before she moved into her apartment earlier this month, she ran into Zastoupil at a mutual friend’s house.  He offered to help her move, and she agreed.   She has had limited contact with him since then.  She confirmed that Zastoupil did not have permission to enter her home, noting that he entered through a window by removing an air conditioner.

Deputies observed multiple items had been moved inside the residence and that a mirror and shoe rack had been broken.

Deputies advised Zastoupil of his rights, and he agreed to provide a statement.  He explained he had been staying at the apartment for two days and was planning to move in.  The door was locked when he arrived at the apartment, so he entered through the window, where an air conditioner was installed.  He claimed that he wanted to retrieve a cell phone that he left in the apartment and that the victim was “gang stalking” him.  He became angry and admitted to breaking the mirror.

Deputies located a cell phone in Zastoupil’s jacket pocket but confirmed it belonged to the victim, and they returned it to her.

Zastoupil was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail for Residential Burglary, Malicious Mischief 3rd Degree, and Theft from a Building 3rd Degree.
