Erratic Male Runs into Traffic and Punches a Vehicle, Causing Damage

Responding to a disorderly person call, Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested an adult male suspect for Malicious Mischief 3rd Degree.  The victims and witnesses said the suspect was walking in the roadway as he tried to punch/hit passing vehicles.  One vehicle, recently purchased by the victims, reportedly sustained an estimated $700,00 in damage caused by the suspect.  The suspect was booked into the Spokane County Jail for Malicious Mischief 3rd Degree.

On June 30, 2024, at approximately 7:25 pm, Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the report of a disorderly male near W. Hastings Road and N. Mill Road.  Several callers reported that the male was walking in traffic and trying to hit/punch cars.

Deputies arrived and spoke with the victims and witnesses, who told them the male, later identified as 39-year-old Benjamin J. Carrillo, was walking into traffic while trying to hit/punch vehicles as they passed.   One victim stated that he and his wife were driving by when Carrillo stepped out into the travel portion of the roadway and hit/punched their recently purchased vehicle.

Deputies observed a dent in the passenger’s side rear quarter panel of the victim’s vehicle (Estimated Damage of $700).  The victims explained that Carrillo was acting crazy.

Witnesses also provided similar accounts of Carrillo’s disorderly conduct.

While talking with the victims and witnesses, Deputies observed Carrillo walking east on W. Hastings Road from N. Mill Road.

With probable cause to arrest Carrillo with malicious mischief, Deputies got in their patrol cars and approached Carrillo with lights activated, but Carrillo ignored them and continued to walk away.   When the Deputies exited their vehicles, Carrillo turned toward them and pointed his middle finger at them.  Carrillo was ordered to stop and advised he was under arrest, but instead of surrendering, he turned, puffed out his chest, and took a fighting stance.  As he did, his aggressive demeanor escalated, and he began waving at the Deputies, attempting to coax them into a fight, saying, “(Expletive) you guys!  Come on, let’s go!”

Trying to de-escalate the incident and not wanting a violent encounter with Carrillo, one Deputy drew his Taser and activated its targeting system as he called for emergency assistance.  Carrillo was advised the Taser would be used if he did not comply.  Thankfully, Carrilo listened to the commands, surrendered, and was safely taken into custody.

Deputies noted Carrillo had blood on his pants, and his knuckles were scraped, bleeding, and swollen.  He was provided medical treatment at the scene, but he refused treatment.

Deputies obtained a booking exception due to Carrillo’s continued disorderly behavior, and he was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail for Malicious Mischief 3rd Degree.
