Altercation Leads to a Fatal Shooting and Unlawful Possession of Firearm Arrest
Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reported shooting at a residence in Mead. An adult male was found shot and unresponsive inside the residence. Deputies and Spokane County Fire District 9 Firefighters provided medical aid, but unfortunately, the male was pronounced deceased at the scene. The adult male, who lived next door, said he confronted two males he believed were burglarizing the neighbor’s home. One male ran, but the second hit him in the head with what he thought was a rock. The situation escalated further, leading to the perceived burglar’s shooting and death. The male neighbor was found to be a convicted felon, prohibited from legally possessing a firearm, and arrested for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
This remains an active investigation, and additional information is not available.
On April 7, 2025, at approximately 12:55 am, Spokane County Deputies responded to a shooting in the 11600 block of N. Sheridan Street in Mead.
The caller advised that she and a male, 47-year-old Cheyanne R. Humphrey, observed two males stealing things from the next-door neighbor’s home. When they confronted the suspects, one hit Humphrey, who was armed with a pistol, in the head with a rock. One suspect fled, and the second had been shot.
Deputies arrived and initially contacted Humphrey, who was holding a bleeding head wound. He advised one of the suspects had been shot and was still inside the home.
Deputies forced entry into the residence and located an unresponsive adult male lying on the ground. The male, who appeared to have been shot, was not breathing, and Deputies immediately began CPR/first aid. Their efforts to save the male’s life continued with the assistance of Spokane County Fire District 9 Firefighters and AMR personnel, but he was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
Talking with Humphrey, the Deputies observed he had a significant injury to his head. He told Deputies he woke up and saw an unidentified male loading items into a basket at his neighbor’s home. He armed himself with a handgun and went outside with the adult female to confront the person, telling him to leave. The male suspect fled on foot, but the female noticed another unknown male inside the house. She confronted him through the window, telling him to leave as well. Humphrey said he was then hit in the head with what he believed was a rock, and he fired a “warning shot.” He told the male again to leave, but instead, the male still inside, began assaulting the female through the window, and he shot at the male. The male fell backward, and when Humphrey looked inside, he saw the male lying on the ground, unconscious. He said the male would not respond to questions, so he unloaded the handgun and set it on the ground. Medics at the scene treated his head wound.
The female said that she and Humphrey left their next-door residence to confront a male believed to have been breaking into the neighbor’s home. She was carrying a flashlight, and Humphrey was armed with a pistol. Humphrey confronted the male, telling him to leave, and he ran away. She noticed a second male inside the trailer. She climbed onto steps next to the window and confronted the second male, telling him to leave. Instead, the male walked toward her and hit her with a rock. As he continued to assault her, she started hitting him with her flashlight, and Humphrey fired a “warning shot.” The male paused his attack for a moment and then continued hitting her. She then heard a second shot, and the male stopped hitting her and fell to the ground. She stepped down, noticed Humphrey was bleeding from his head, and called 911.
Deputies also talked to a male who said he owned the trailer but was recently evicted. Before the eviction, he lived there with another adult male and, sometimes, a third.
Major Crime Detectives responded to the scene to continue the investigation. Initial information learned through the investigation indicates that the two males confronted by Humphrey and the female may have previously lived at the residence before being evicted. They still had personal belongings inside, which appears to be why they returned.
Investigators recovered a semiautomatic pistol on the ground where Humphrey stated he had placed it. A check of Humphrey’s criminal history showed he was a convicted felon and prohibited from legally possessing a firearm.
Humphrey was arrested and booked into the Spokane County Jail for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm 2nd Degree.
Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances of this fatal shooting, and depending on the information learned, additional charges or arrests are possible. No further information is available at this time.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the name of the deceased, along with his cause and manner of death, when appropriate.
