Deputies Respond to DV Incident in a Vehicle, Suspect Located and Arrested
Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reported attempted vehicle theft and Domestic Violence (DV) Assault in the Chattaroy area. The suspect, said to be armed with a pistol, fled the vehicle on foot with his young daughter following the assault. He was located a short time later and arrested. The child was uninjured and later released to her mother, who was not involved in this incident. Deputies recovered a magazine for a firearm, but the pistol itself was not located.
On March 1, 2025, at approximately 5:45 pm, Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reported attempted vehicle theft and DV assault. The caller/victim said she was driving a friend, later identified as 35-year-old Jason M. Rider and his young daughter from the Newport area to Spokane.
Arriving Deputies contacted the adult female victim in the 3700 block of E. Chattaroy, Washington.
She explained that she picked up Rider and his daughter in Newport and was driving them to Spokane. Rider wanted her to take back roads to avoid contact with law enforcement, and they began to argue. Rider, who was seated in the passenger seat, grabbed the victim by her hair and began punching her in the face while she was driving. He demanded she pull over, grabbed the emergency hand brake, and threatened to shoot her if she didn’t. She said Rider was armed with a handgun, but she did not feel threatened by his statement.
In the 3700 block of Chattaroy Road, she pulled over, and Rider snatched her cell phone without permission. He got out of the car and walked away with his daughter. The victim asked a nearby person to call 911. She explained that during this incident, she did not hit or assault Rider in any way.
A Deputy noted that he observed a small mark on the victim consistent with her being hit.
Deputies also learned that there was an active DV No Contact Order banning Rider from contacting the victim as the protected person, causing her harm, or threatening her, and it prohibited him from possessing a firearm.
Additional Deputies arrived, established a perimeter, and began to search for Rider and his daughter. Deputies were also aware that Rider had previously been arrested for Robbery (DV), Assault 2nd Degree, Strangulation (DV), and Harassment Threats to Kill (DV) involving this same female victim.
At approximately 6:10 pm, Deputies contacted Rider at a residence in the 3700 block of Jim Hill Road after he called, stating the victim assaulted him and wanted to report it. Rider was safely detained, and his uninjured daughter was found to be with him.
Rider was advised of his rights and agreed to answer questions. He said the victim started driving erratically during an argument on the way back from Newport. He told her to let him out, and she punched him in the face. He only pushed her with his hands to keep her from hitting him. When the victim pulled over, he walked away with his daughter and went to the nearest home to use their phone to call 911. He denied taking the victim’s phone or having a handgun, but he admitted to saying he had a gun as a bluff in an attempt to get her to stop hitting him.
Knowing Rider was reported to have a pistol in a holster on his hip, the Deputy noted that Rider’s belt was not inserted into the belt loops of his pants, indicating he may have partially taken it off to remove a holster and hastily repositioned it incorrectly. He did not observe any visible injuries to Rider’s face that could help corroborate his version of the incident. Rider was advised he was under arrest, and his uninjured daughter was released to her mother, who was not involved in this incident.
Deputies searched the area, attempting to locate the pistol or the victim’s cell phone, but were unsuccessful. A short time later, a person in the general area reported finding a pistol magazine in their yard. Deputies responded and collected it as evidence.
Deputies did not find a pistol during a search that evening or one later the next day.
Rider was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail for Robbery 2nd Degree, Violation of a DV Order with Assault, Assault 4th Degree (DV), Violation of a DV Order, and two counts of Reckless Endangerment.
