Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Detectives are investigating a shooting following a reported vehicle theft. The vehicle theft suspect was taken into custody by Deputies, provided medical aid, and transported to a hospital for possible life-threatening gunshot wounds. The owner of the stolen vehicle, who chased and shot at the suspect, was detained and interviewed.
On December 13, 2024, at approximately 8:40 pm, Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reported vehicle theft (Jeep) from a residence near W. Charles Road and North Dover Road. Additionally, the armed adult male owner of the Jeep was attempting to follow the suspect in another vehicle.
Minutes later, a separate report of gunshots being heard in the area of W. Four Mound Road, east of N. Landt Farms Lane, was received.
In the same timeframe, the owner of the Jeep reported he had shot at the theft suspect, who eventually abandoned the Jeep in a ditch off W. Four Mound Road, east of N. Landt Farms Lane. He had located blood in the Jeep after the suspect fled in an unknown direction on foot.
Additionally, another report was received regarding an unknown male who was bleeding and banging on the front door of a residence in the same area.
Deputies responded to the multiple locations with the assistance of Spokane Police Officers, Airway Heights Police Officers, and Kalispel Tribal Police Officers.
Deputies provided medical aid to the wounded vehicle theft suspect and detained him. He was transported to the hospital for possible life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was last known to be in serious but stable condition.
Initial information indicates the owner of the stolen Jeep armed himself and began chasing the fleeing suspect. At some point during this incident, the Jeep owner fired his weapon at the suspect, who eventually abandoned the Jeep in a ditch off W. Four Mound Road, east of N. Landt Farms Lane.
It is believed the wounded vehicle theft suspect then fled the Jeep on foot and ran to a nearby residence, where Deputies took him into custody.
Because the vehicle theft suspect has not been formally charged and remains hospitalized, we are not releasing his name at this time.
The owner of the Jeep was detained, but after speaking with investigators, he was released.
Major Crimes Detectives processed and documented three scenes, seized a handgun and two vehicles and interviewed witnesses as the investigation continued throughout the night.
This remains an active investigation; additional updates will be provided when appropriate.
